Approaching a dog: What to do?

Every dog is unique and acts differently when meeting a human for the first time, some are excited, while some can be nervous or shy. When we see a cute dog, we usually instantly reach out our hand to touch it and make a high pitch noise. Well, this could be disturbing for some dogs, so here is some advice on how to approach a dog, the right way.

First, if the dog is with his owner, you should ask for permission to approach or pet the dog. If a dog is without his owner or is a stray dog, make sure you’re not interrupting him in what’s he’s doing and watch for his body language. If the dog is tense, his ears are slightly backwards and his stare is intense, it would be best not to approach him.

After you’ve received the owner’s permission or you see that the dog is relaxed, approach him steadily and don’t make any sudden moves. Next, you should crouch down to the dog’s level, stay calm and don’t show any signs that you’re uncomfortable.

Once you’re on the dog’s level, don’t reach your hand out to him, wait for the dog to move closer to you and sniff you. If the dog remains in your space, it means that he comfortable with you and will allow you to pet him. If the dog withdraws, it means he is not very pleased to be around you and doesn’t want to be pet by you.

It is best to pet the dog under his chin, chest or shoulder, anywhere he can see your hand. Never go for the head first, as the dog can’t see your hand and might be a little nervous in that situation. Also, it is important not to hug the dog, because he can feel like he is in trap and cannot get away.

So, there you have it! A few steps to remember when approaching a dog. Just don’t forget to be calm, don’t make any sudden moves and let the dog come to you.
